Overview
Pinealon is a synthetic tripeptide (glutamate-aspartate-arginine, EDR) from the same Khavinson bioregulator research program as Vilon and Epithalon, studied primarily for neuroprotective effects in cell culture and rodent models.
Proposed Mechanism of Action
Consistent with the broader bioregulator hypothesis, Pinealon is proposed to act on gene expression relevant to oxidative stress resistance and neuronal survival, rather than through a single conventional receptor. Reported effects in the literature include reduced reactive oxygen species accumulation and preserved mitochondrial function in stressed neurons.
Research Context
The cited study modeled prenatal hyperhomocysteinemia in rats (elevated maternal homocysteine, a condition associated with neurodevelopmental harm) and administered Pinealon to pregnant dams. Offspring of Pinealon-treated mothers showed improved cognitive performance and reduced markers of oxidative neuronal damage compared to untreated offspring of hyperhomocysteinemic mothers.
Limitations of the Current Evidence
- This is a specific, narrow animal model (maternal peptide administration during a specific type of prenatal metabolic stress) — it does not establish general nootropic or neuroprotective effects in adult animals or humans, despite that broader claim circulating in secondary sources.
- As of recent reviews we found in our research, no completed peer-reviewed randomized human trial of Pinealon has been published; the evidence base remains preclinical and largely from the originating research group.
