Overview

Thymalin is a polypeptide complex originally extracted from calf thymus tissue, developed at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology as one of the earliest compounds in Vladimir Khavinson's broader "bioregulator peptide" research program (the same program that later produced shorter synthetic peptides like Epithalon).

Proposed Mechanism of Action

As with the shorter Khavinson bioregulators, Thymalin's proposed mechanism centers on supporting normal thymic and immune function — the thymus gland's role in T-cell maturation naturally declines with age, and Thymalin is theorized to help counteract that decline, supporting broader immune competence.

Research Context

The cited study followed 266 elderly and older adults (average age 71-77) over 6-8 years, comparing Thymalin alone, Epithalamin (pineal extract) alone, both combined, or placebo, given as short annual injection courses. The combined-treatment group showed markedly reduced mortality and reduced incidence of acute respiratory illness compared to controls, alongside improvements in several biomarkers.

Limitations of the Current Evidence

  • This is an important, large, long-duration study, but it is open-label, was conducted at a single Russian institute, and to our knowledge has not been independently replicated by researchers outside the originating group — a meaningful gap for a mortality-outcome claim this significant.
  • As a "polypeptide complex" rather than a single defined molecule, batch-to-batch composition of Thymalin preparations may vary more than a single-sequence synthetic peptide, which is worth keeping in mind when comparing products or trying to relate this trial to a specific commercial preparation.
