Vilon is a synthetic dipeptide (lysine-glutamic acid, Lys-Glu) — one of the shortest peptides in the Khavinson bioregulator family, alongside compounds like Epithalon, Pinealon, and Cortagen. It was developed as part of the same St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology research program.
Proposed Mechanism of Action
The Khavinson group's overarching hypothesis for this whole peptide family is that very short peptides can enter cells and act at the level of the genome itself — binding DNA or chromatin and modulating which genes are expressed — rather than acting through a conventional cell-surface receptor. This is a distinctive, non-mainstream mechanistic claim; it should be read as the originating group's proposed model, not an independently settled mechanism.
Research Context
The cited study used DNA-microarray technology to measure gene expression changes in mouse heart tissue after exposure to Vilon and Epithalon. Of roughly 15,000 gene clones examined, Vilon was associated with altered expression in 36 clones — a modest but measurable transcriptional signature, consistent with (though not proof of) the group's broader epigenetic-regulation hypothesis.
Limitations of the Current Evidence
- This is a gene-expression association study, not a functional or clinical outcome study — it tells you Vilon is associated with changed expression of specific genes in mouse heart tissue, not what physiological effect that produces.
- As with the other bioregulators on this site, essentially all of the primary literature originates from the same research group, and we did not find independent replication from unaffiliated laboratories.
